Drill Doctor DD750X Drill Bit Sharpener

There are many good things about this product. When I called tech support with a problem (chuck sticking), I got a human being with a knowledgable answer (loosen a few overtorqued screws) in a matter of minutes. On standard drill bits, it works very well. However, I got it mostly to sharpen hex-base drill bits, as I use these drill bits with a quick-change chuck all the time. And I basically destroyed several bits (well, they were dull anyway) finding out that the chuck supplied with this unit simply can't get a proper grip on hex-base drill bits. They will be out of alignment, which means it won't work, at all. You just grind off random bits of your drill bit at random angles, resulting in a useless bit. Well, I _was_ able to sharpen a few of the bigger hex bits, but the 1/16", 1/8", and 3/16" bits were trashed. So for my main use--sharpening hex-base bits--this fails pretty badly. If I'd known this, I wouldn't have gotten it. (Of course none of the marketing information or tech support information mentions this--if they did, they might lose some sales.) So I'll keep it, but quite disappointed. And no, tech support didn't have any suggestions for how to fix the problem. So, if you want to sharpen small hex bits, give this a pass. If you don't use hex bits, it is a good deal. And the video they supply is excellent for teaching you how to use it.Your mileage may vary.

Skil 6445-01 120-Volt 1/2-Inch Hammer Drill

Great tool for a great price. Was considering going the rental route, but it would have cost more than buying the drill. Had to drill numerous holes in cement block for screwing "Tapcons" into the block and hanging plywood on. The cheap drill bit that came with the screws went into the block like butter with this drill. If you need a hammer drill and are on a budget, this is the way to go!

Makita BTD142HW 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Impact Driver Kit

I do a number of projects through our house and some woodworking. By far the most frequently used tool is a cordless drill/driver. I own an 18V with a traditional battery; a good performer but heavy and slightly unbalanced in the hand. A 14.4 volt with traditional battery which became much less used after the purchase of the 18 volt but still saw some use on short duration projects simply because it is lighter than the 18V, and DeWalt 7.2V "stick-style" used for smaller and/or more delicate projects. Over the past year, on DIY programs and in tool reviews, I had been noticing more attention given to impact drivers for everyday use in a broad variety of applications and projects. Especially in driving screws. Since this is a lot of what I use my drill/drivers for, my interest was piqued by the general consensus that the impact drivers were more efficient and less prone to the bit skipping out of the screw heads. This prompted my quest for yet another new tool for the arsenal. I hit the shelves of the local stores and checked out the current crop. From the very first time I picked up this one I was in love. You see, I have been cursed with wide palms and short fingers and not a single power tool I have ever held or used truly felt comfortable in my hand. Mind you, I could still get a firm grip and it was never a safety problem, but especially with a heavier tool like my 18V, on longer projects I inevitably ended up with fatigue and a lingering ache in my wrist. When I…

DeWalt DW511 1/2

I purchased this DeWalt DW511 half-inch Hammerdrill and am very happy with its performance. I had previously tried to mount railing and accessories around concrete steps and our pool, using a rotary drill with masonry bits (unsatisfactory) and also tried a Remington 476 Power Hammer using those 22 blanks to drive steel concrete nails into undrilled and drilled areas. Fun stuff shooting that, but it didn't work well, some nails didn't penetrate, and it really chipped out the hole areas that then required patching. I wanted quick, easy, and professional looking holes in my old concrete steps for installation of a new railing. Following the Amazon reviews, I selected this DeWalt hammerdrill. I was so pleased to be able to drill quarter inch holes about 2 inches into the concrete, each in about 30 seconds. I used top quality Bosch Blue Granite hammer drills. Bought a pack of them and have only used one so far to drill 16 holes to mount railing using Cobra drive nail anchors! I don't understand some of the negative reviews from folks who broke this drill - they must have really tried to muscle them. You have to let a hammer drill do its thing and it doesn't take long to get a feel for how much speed and pressure you need to keep it going. Remember, if it hits a stone in aggregate, it is going to slow down until it is through. You won't go wrong with this drill, and it has a rotary setting too for conventional drilling jobs.

Great value and works like it should. Can't comment on it's life as I've only cut through about 12" of concrete so far. However I see no visible signs of wear.

Bosch 11224VSR 7/8-Inch SDS-Plus Bulldog Rotary Hammer

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful 5.0 out of 5 stars70 Years Old or 72 Hours New, November 29, 2002 By Tod Murdock (Carlsbad, CA United States) - See all my reviewsWhether your drilling into concrete 3 days old or 70 years old, there is nothing better. I had remodeled a 70 year old building and had to drill for anchor bolts into the concrete. Well we all know how hard concrete gets over time and my old Porter Cable only lasted a few 7/8" holes. I had heard about the Bosch and ran out to get one right away. 25 holes later, the beast was barely warming up. I must say the [money] I payed for the "life saver" was well worth it. Buy this tool!

I used this bit to horozontal drill through 27 inches of concrete wall (12 plus 15)with a Bosch Bulldog. Nice consistent bore. Starts well and grinds right on through. Cuttings are conveyed out of the hole nicely. Big awesome bit.

Makita BHP452HW 18-Volt 1/2-Inch Compact Cordless Percussion-Driver Drill

I was using a 12V DeWalt for years and I even had two batteries rebuilt (not a good solution) before I considered this light weight Drill. This drill has plenty of power with very little wieght. Just built an 8 X 10 deck with this tool and drilled a few pieces of slate as well. The light is welcomed as the job continued into dusk. Recharge is quick, but the fan is noisy. I am a very happy camper! No Complaints

MK Diamond 155948 6-Inch Dry Standard Grade Core Bits For Masonry

I first learned about dry cutting hole cutters from a HVAC installer and how well they worked on right angle grinders. They do not need water for coolant and the slots clear away the grindings. The life on these is quite good considering that they are run dry.The key is to get core bits that have the cutting segments laser welded to the body. The ones that use silver brazing cannot take the heat and the segments will soon start to fly off and then the core drill is out of balance. These are long enough for a double course of building brick and most cinder block. They are not able to cut through rebar which if hit will dramatically end the life of the core drill by breaking off segments. These come in standard sizes which is why we switched over to the Blue Boar dry cutting diamond core bits which come in standard sizes (3, 4, 5, 6) and also in pipe OD sizes too. Big improvement to use the Blue Boar diamond core bits and make holes that are 2-5/8" instead of 3" for a 2" ABS pipe or a 3-5/8" hole instead of a 4" hole for pipe and have to caulk like crazy. We get over 200 holes on average with the Blue Boar which is about 15% more than we were getting with the MK Diamond dry cutting core drills. If you do use a high rpm angle grinder instead of an expensive core drill Blue Boar sells a centering bit and different sizes of rubber stabilizer squares. They make it a lot easier to start the hole drilling and once the hole is started it takes only a few seconds to…

Bosch 11221DVS 7/8-Inch SDS Rotary Hammer

I've used this drill/hammer for the last 3 years to drill hundreds of holes, in my brick wall house and at friends. Very powerful drilling, quiet operation, almost completely dust free. Takes about 1.5 seconds to drill the usual 1/4" hole. The assembly and removal of the sucking hose and arm, every time I take it from the case and back, is a small nuisance. The sucking cup around the drill is non-transparent, which makes it cumbersome to precisely see the spot to drill - you need to pull the arm spring a bit, aim, then hold steady and fire. All in all - well worth the trouble - the power and cleanliness makes it a joy to drill.

Bosch 11236VS 7.5 Amp 1-1/8-Inch SDS Rotary Hammer

After using my neighbors 11255VSR Bulldog Extreme (recently listed at $179 on Amazon)- I realized what I was missing out on. I did some research and decided on the heavier 11236VS. It is a great tool for the homeowner/DIY handyman. Currently Amazon has the best price I could find, the local big box harware store is selling it at a ridiculous $317.00.This tool is great but it does have what I consider one major flaw! It does not have a reverse. Are You kidding ME! - What was Bosch thinking! Even the next lower model has reverse!! Granted you only really need it if you bind up a bit. When using this tool always have a good pair of vise grips handy. Also the unit is somewhat sloppy (lateral motion at the end of the bit) even when brand new. I don't think it's a big problem if your primarily drilling. But if your primary use is chipping, and you need accuracy (so as to not disturb surrounding area), you might want to try another tool.Overall a great tool for the handyman, and a great price at Amazon!

Bosch 11316EVS SDS-Max Demolition Hammer

I just got this one and I love it. Very, very good power to weight ratio. Punches thru 4 inch slabs easily. If you have to do this kind of work, this is an impressive tool. It took a little longer going thru a 6 inch stem wall, but much less toll on the body and ears than using a 90 lb pneumatic jack in a horizontal position. If you have to do some demo work under the house, this is the only way to go. It can take apart brick work easily. The shovel attachment goes thru hard soil like it's warm butter. I used the earlier verision that belonged to a friend and now I wonder why I waited so long to get this one. It comes with a plastic case which is OK, but I would have much prefferd a metal case for this brute.
